cyclic amp

cyclic amp defined in 1951 year

cyclic amp - cyclic amp;
cyclic amp - Form of adenosine monophosphate produced by the enzyme adenyl cyclase at the cell surface from ATP, and diffusing thence into the interior of the cell, where it activates various enzymes. The production of c-AMP is known to occur in a number of cells sensitive to particular hormones (e.g. adrenaline, glucagon, TSH; not the steroid hormones) when the hormone impinges on the cell; and it is an essential link in the chain of reactions set going by the hormone. c-AMP seems also to be concerned in the release of the neural transmitters adrenaline and noradrenaline, when an impulse arrives at an adrenergic ending.
