cytoghrome - cytoghrome;cytoghrome - Mixture of similar substance (proteins, with an iron-containing prosthetic group allied to that of haemoglobin) concerned, mostly as coenzymes, in cell respiration; widely distributed in aerobic organisms. Wing muscles of insects are particularly rich in it. Its oxidation by molecular oxygen, and subsequent reduction by oxidizable substances in the cell (both processes under influence of enzymes), is main way in which atmospheric oxygen enters into metabolism of cell; about 90 per cent of oxygen consumption is mediated by cytochrome. The cytochromes have characteristic absorption spectra, which makes it possible to study their reactions in living cells and tissues.
