diakinesis

diakinesis defined in 1951 year

diakinesis - diakinesis;
diakinesis - Final stage in prophase of first division of meiosis, following diplotene. Chromosomes move to periphery of nucleus, close to the nuclear membrane. They become short and thick as a result of a further process of coiling and contraction that begins in an earlier stage (pachytene) and the number of chiasmata decreases (See also: Terminalization). Nucleoli disappear. Diakinesis ends with disappearance of nuclear membrane and appearance of division spindle.
