dikaryon - (of fungus hypha or mycelium) composed of cells containing two haploid nuclei which undergo simultaneous division during formation of each new cell. Forms a third phase (dikaryophase) interposed between haploid and diploid phases. Occurs in Ascomycetes where it is usually short and in Basidiomy-cetes where it is relatively long. Nuclei may be genetically identical, or different. Compare with: Afonokaryon.
