golgi apparatus - GOLGI APPARATUS (GOLGI BODY, GOLGI MATERIAL);golgi apparatus - Local Structure present in cytoplasm of animal and plant cells. Appears by electron microscopy as a group of paired membranes constituting a number of flattened sacs (cisternae) aligned roughly parallel, frequently with vesicular expansions, and associated with separate vesicles of various sizes. Vesicles seem to arise in some cells at the ends of tubules that extend as a meshwork from the margins of the cisternae. In cells of vertebrates there is usually one such complex body, in those of invertebrates and plants there may be several (dictyosomes) scattered in the cytoplasm. Function imperfectly known, but concerned in secretion, e.g. in plants conspicuous in young cells and thought to be concerned in secretion of certain wall material.
