lateral line system - LATERAL LINE SYSTEM (ACUSTICO-LATERALIS SYSTEM);lateral line system - System of sense organs, present in aquatic vertebrates (Agnatha, fish, and aquatic Amphibia), in pores or canals arranged in a line down each side of the body, and in complicated pattern of lines on head. Detects pressure changes including vibrations (low-frequency sounds) in water. Canals in dermal bones of head lodge the system, and are important in establishing homologies of these bones in different fish. Inner ear is probably a modified part of system. Supplied entirely by cranial nerves.
