lung - lung;lung - Organ for breathing air. (1) In vertebrates. Embryologically a diverticulum of the gut. Present in early fishes before origin of Amphibia, probably as an accessory breathing organ adapted to oxygen-poor fresh waters in which earliest vertebrates probably lived. A functional lung occurs in some living fishes (Polypterus, Dipnoi). In others it has evolved into swim-bladder. Present in almost all amniotes. See also: Bronchus, Bronchiole, Alveolus. (2) In land molluscs, highly vascular part of mantle.
