Gland of gnathostome vertebrate situated in mesentery near duodenum, into which it discharges through pancreatic duct an alkaline mixture of digestive enzymes (trypsino-gen, lipase, amylase, maltase, etc.). Stimulated to secrete this mixture by hormone secretin. Also contains groups of cells (islets of Langerhans) of quite different function, secreting into blood of portal system the hormones insulin and glucagon according to the level of the blood sugar.
