primate - A member of the Primates, an order of placental mammals, containing man, apes, and monkeys. A primarily arboreal order, rather primitive in structure. Usually climb by grasping; nails commonly present instead of claws, and big toe and often thumb usually well-developed and opposable to other digits. Tree-life has also involved particularly well-developed eye-sight, often with binocular vision (See also: Fovea). Relatively large brain. First appear at beginning of Tertiary. Includes three sub-orders, Lemuroidea, Tarsioidea, and Anthropoidea.
