propriogeptor - (1) Receptor which detects position and movement, e.g. kinaesthetic receptors such as those of muscle of vertebrates and skeleton of insects recording passive stretch, or contraction; or balancing organs of internal ear. Usually do not show sensory adaptation. Compare with: Interoceptor. (2) In wider sense, receptor which detects changes within the body other than those caused by substances taken into gut or respiratory tract; including, e.g. deep pain receptors, and receptors detecting pressure in bloodvessels, as well as those included under (1).
