unit membrane - unit membrane;unit membrane - The common form, as seen in the electron microscope, of the membranes of cells: i.e. of the plasma membrane and of the membranes of organelles such as mitochondria, nucleus and endoplasmic reticulurn. When suitably stained with heavy metals, the unit membrane appears in section as a pair of parallel dark lines (hence it is often called a 'double membrane'), the whole structure being about 75 Angstroms thick. Probably consists of a layer of lipid (two molecules thick) sandwiched between two layers of protein.
