Vertebrates differ from other chordates in having a skull, which surrounds a well-developed brain, and a skeleton of cartilage or bone. Not all the fossil ones have been shown to have a vertebral column (though most of them have), so that the term Craniata is perhaps preferable, though in much less common use. Vertebrata is occasionally used as synonym for Chordata.
