maturation of germ-cells - (Zool.). Process of development of mature sperm and ova, from normally sized and proportioned precursor cells, which occurs in testis and ovary respectively. It includes reduction division or meiosis of the nucleus, which halves number of chromosomes; and extensive changes in cytoplasm, quite different in the two sorts of gametes.
