plasma-membrane - Extremely thin membrane (about one-hundredth micrometre thick) mainly of fat and protein covering surface of all cells (or protoplast in plants). Responsible for restricted penetration of many substances into interior of cell and in the reverse direction (See also: Permeability). Severe damage to membrane at once destroys cell. In plants plasma-membranes occur both at outer surface of protoplast (external, ectoplast, plasmalemma) surrounded by cell wall, and bordering vacuole (internal, tonoplast).
