protozoa - Group (phylum or sub-kingdom) of animals differing from the rest (Metazoa and Parazoa) in consisting of one cell only, but resembling them and plants, and differing from bacteria, in having at least one well-defined nucleus. Contains classes Flagellata, Rhizopoda, Ciliophora, Sporozoa. Unicellularity does not necessarily imply close relationship; the fungi and algae also include unicellular forms. The status of the Flagellata is particularly complicated. Protozoa are ubiquitous, and of great significance in the economy of nature; some parasitic forms are important economically and medically (e.g. malaria parasite).
